Use whatever apples you happen to have on hand first, rather than letting produce go to waste. But if you’re heading to the grocer to pick up fresh supplies, keep in mind some varieties of apple are more well-suited for certain dishes than others. Some of our favourites include:

BRAEBURN: This variety has a sweet-tart flavour and a firm texture, making it a great all-purpose apple for cooking. It’s particularly good for pies, crumbles and tarts.

PACIFIC ROSE: This sweet, juicy apple is great for making apple sauce, as well as for baking in cakes and muffins.

ROYAL GALA: This sweet apple has a crisp texture that holds up well in baked goods. It’s great for pies and other desserts that call for a sweeter flavour.
