James Bowman Born 1941 Countertenor
A towering presence on the opera and concert stage, Bowman made his stage debut as Oberon in Britten’s at Aldeburgh in 1967. It was a role he made his own around the in 1973. Born in Oxford, Bowman was a choral scholar at New College, and sang at Ely Cathedral and Westminster Abbey before going on to make a major impression as a soloist in both early and contemporary repertoire. The first countertenor to sing at Glyndebourne, he left a large recorded legacy.
