“I think, on the whole, eating outside is almost always better. The good thing about eating outdoors at night is that you can leave everything in the garden and sort it all out in the morning. It doesn’t really matter so much if it’s all outside.
There are two caveats to this, however. I loathe not being able to see the food I am eating, and I like to be not too cold. If the weather isn’t warm, I don’t see the point in trying to do it. The test of a warm night is that if an ordinary candle burns outside steadily, you’re alright to be out there. A lot of candles – we use shiny brass candlesticks – and a lot of storm lanterns are key to being able to see what you’re eating.
In general, I don’t like things to be too stiff and eating outside helps with that. But you also don’t want to be uncomfortable when you’re eating. I enjoy eating in the greenhouse. It’s large enough to have a good table, so you can sit inside and still get the evening outdoors effect. And it’s very nice
