APRIL 2023 marked a quarter of a century of Class 66 operation in the UK when the first locomotive for EWS, No. 66001, landed at Newport Docks on April 18, 1998.
It was the first of an order of 250 locomotives for EWS which was an instant success, bringing huge changes in rail freight operation in the UK. It did not stop there. Other operators purchased Class 66s
