Admire medieval marvels in peace – aside from the clamour of Carnival celebrations. Viareggio, on Tuscany’s north-west coast, is a fairly regular 20th-century beach resort, with a long stretch of sand and some eye-catching Art Nouveau/Art Deco architecture. But on Sundays during February, its streets are invaded by huge carri (floats) adorned with elaborate, often hilariously satirical papier-mâché caricatures of celebs and politicians. Viareggio’s Carnival is second only to Venice’s in
