Mast-blocking residents will thwart Government’s 5G rollout
The Government’s ambition of rolling out standalone 5G by 2030 is laudable (Issue 656, page 8), but I can see it smashing into the reality of councils rejecting planning permission to build more masts. Two things obsess residents in my area: potholes and phone masts. They want the former filled in, and the latter banished to the other side of town. Every other message on my neighbourhood WhatsApp groups is a petition for either cause.
I’ve just searched Google for ‘phone masts rejected’ and it brought up news stories about councils refusing planning permission in the following places: Bournemouth, Brighton, Cardiff, Chester, Coventry, Derby, Hereford, Poole and Solihull. And that was just on the first page of Google’s results!
