HOW THINGS CHANGE

Hi John,

It has been some time since I have sent anything to your magazine but continue to enjoy every mag each month. I was thinking the other day… how things change.

I recently came across a photo of my first caravan. Purchased in 1977, it was a 15ft Viscount, built about 1973 and towed with my 1976 HJ Holden ute, a six-cylinder Tri-matic (that's a three-speed auto).

Back then no one mentioned tare weight, ball weight, GVM or GCM. You just hooked up the van and drove, and if the tow vehicle had enough guts to pull the load, off you went.

But the legal speed limit80km/h, a huge contrast to the 3.5 tonne behemoths hurtling down the highway at llOkm/h, relying on technology to keep them on the road.
