Designed by Sir John Simpson and Maxwell Ayrton, the original stadium was only intended to be a temporary structure for the British Empire Exhibition (see page 60). It was saved by businessmen Arthur Elvin and Sir James Stevenson, who saw its future potential.

Located in a quiet corner of Middlesex and surrounded by open fields, construction work on Wembley Stadium – originally known as the Empire Stadium – was completed in April 1923, less than a year after it began.
