n 2011, archaeologists excavating a number of pits outside the walls of the Egyptian site known as Tell el-Dab'a came across the skeletal remains of 12 hands; and that argues that these hands were prizes, turned in to pharaoh's officials in return for "gold of honour". This custom was already known from texts and reliefs, but these hands would be the first physical evidence of this practice.
