BUCKINGHAM Palace may have become his official address – on paper at least – when he became king but Charles has never much liked the 775-room block of a building in the heart of London.
“The king doesn’t see it as a viable future home or a house that’s fit for purpose in the modern world,” a royal insider told The Sunday Times shortly after the queen died.
“Both from a cost and an environmental perspective, he believes it’s not sustainable.
“Charles is no fan of ‘the big house’, as he calls it, and finds it cold and impersonal.” He’s reportedly refusing to move in with Camilla until a major restoration – estimated to cost around £369 million (R7,8 billion) – is completed for Their Majesties in 2027, according to a palace source.
Transforming the landscape, which was once simply lawn, into a magnificent, everchanging canvas was hard work
“In the interim, the palace will be fully utilised for official business wherever practical.”
