EXPANDING DWELL
Q: Ray, I just read the letter, “Gap Be Told” in the December issue of The writer, Mike, did not mention what he used for a distributor in the engine. If he used the original computer-controlled unit without the ECM, the only advance that he would have would be the dwell change in the module, which would only be a few degrees. The distributor would be in base timing. Marine Power has a GM module in the same distributor that they use in the carbureted engines. That has a 20-degree advance in it. Only the carbureted engines use this module because there is no ECM involved. This module comes in the Delco Voyager series marine ignition package and uses the original harness plugs and coil. I’m sure he could check into that. It is a straight bolt-in module. Otherwise, he could just replace the distributor with one that has a mechanical and a vacuum advance.
