AFTER the damp squib that was the New York Motor Show at the start of April, Shanghai put on an exhibition that staked its claim to be the world’s most important car show. Pretty much every major brand was represented, because most of them rely on the Chinese market for significant sales.
But it was the announcements from Chinese brands of expansion into Europe and the UK that were perhaps most significant, along with the proliferation of new brands.
With very few exceptions, the story was also about electrification, with autonomous driving being a strong theme, too. Here we reveal the major new launches from the many huge halls at Shanghai’s National Centre for Exhibition and Convention.

THE reformed Smart range is taking shape, with the new #3 coupé-crossover one of the stars of the Shanghai Auto Show.
The rebooted company is a joint venture between Mercedes and Chinese giant Geely, with the #3 designed by the German brand (hence more
