What is CarPlay?

WHILECARPLAY OFFICIALLY made its debut in 2014, both the idea and some early implementations had been kicking around since 2008, one year after the original iPhone launched. That’s when Apple teamed up with Mercedes–Benz to release a car with a 30–pin input port that enabled the infotainment system to access and control a connected iPhone or iPod.

The next major development came in 2010 with iPod Out, which Apple developed in conjunctionWorldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) the same year, iPod Out enabled iPod and iPhone to output audio and video to a car’s infotainment system and receive instructions from its control dials, switches and knobs. That joint Apple–BMW project resulted in a cross–platform standard for iPod/iPhone connectivity that other car makers could adopt for their vehicles, with BMW’s arriving in BMW and Mini cars as PlugIn in 2011.
