Once damaged, freedom is hard to restore

A few years before his untimely death, iconic reggae superstar Robert Nesta Marley – going by the moniker Bob Marley and the Wailers – penned something titled Redemption Song. In it, he says, “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.”

Then and now, this song gave me the impression that there is something sinister that befalls one’s mind due to extended periods of enslavement, oppression, repression and colonisation.

While we know officially that South African apartheid lasted about 50 years, historians are also clear in their minds that colonisation of Africa reared its ugly head in the 1500s,
