McCarthy plans vote on a debt ceiling and spending bill as Biden threatens a veto

House Speaker McCarthy is working to secure the support of GOP members to pass a bill to increase the nation's borrowing limit while slashing federal spending. Democrats say it threatens a default.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on a bill as early as Wednesday drafted by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy that links lifting the country's debt ceiling with spending cuts and a series of GOP policy changes.

"We'll be ready to move as early as today," House Majority Leader Steve Scalise told reporters Wednesday. "We want to get this done as soon as possible. But more importantly, we want President Biden to finally start getting engaged in this process."

Speaker McCarthy also told reporters Wednesday he planned a final vote for today.

McCarthy and his top vote counter, Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., both publicly say they are confident the measure, dubbed the Limit, Save and Grow
