Rowland Hilder has been one of my favourite artists for as long as I can remember. Many decades ago I was given Hilder’s first book, Starting with Watercolour, printed in 1966, and was greatly influenced by his powerful use of tonal values in his painting. From that moment on it changed the way that I approached my work. I was privileged to attend a two-day masterclass run by Hilder in August 1985, held at Blackheath Art School, where I learnt first-hand about his working methods, palette and so much more.
