The beauty of the night

Painting a night-time scene can be an exciting undertaking and one that is far removed from daylight views. Very often these scenes are perceived as being just dull shades of grey and black, but once you really start to investigate night scenes you will become aware of the myriad tones of light and colour that dance around in the picture.

Obviously it does depend when and where you decide to do your night scene as all locations are not the same. For example, a moonless night with low cloud cover in the middle of a moor is unlikely to produce an inspiring subject whereas a lamp-lit harbour scene with all the ambient lights and reflections is a different matter altogether. It's these colourful, inspirational night scenes that I will be exploring in the next four issues.
