DESPATCHES Malawian Tea
We were tripping back through time, leaving the sprawling commercial city of Blantyre behind us as we meandered towards Malawi’s southern highlands and into the bright green Thyolo countryside. Majestic mountains soared in the distance, disappearing into thick mist clouds and at the car window, village vendors offered to sell us juicy cuts of sugar cane, just-roasted mielies and skewers of tiny birds - a favourite roadside snack, grilled a few moments before.
We stopped at the roadside ‘Wishing Rock’, a mystical skull-shaped boulder said to grant the wish of anyone able to whistle non-stop while executing one complete circumnavigation of it It seemed pretty straightforward, and we all jumped out the car to purse our lips and try our luck. As with most magical and mysterious things, it turned out to be less simple than anticipated. We took turns walking around the rock as fast as we could
