AROUND THE GARDEN

Keep staking perennials

Push plant supports into the soil around the edge of clumps of perennials to keep them standing upright in the border. The best time to stake or support is before the plant shows any signs of needing it. Once clumps flop in stormy weather or bend under the weight of the water in their stems, it’s difficult to support them and keep the plant looking natural and showing off its flowers well.

Metal hoops are ideal for staking, as are bamboo canes or hazel stems placed around the outside of a plant and connected to each other with string.
