FALKLANDS
Celebrating the scenery
The landscape of the Falkands Islands is conveyed by a local artist in a new set of stamps, the third to honour artist Mike Peake, who left the UK for the Falkland Islands in 1959 to work at the Radio Space Research Station.
Although the first of Mike’s first talent to be appreciated in his adopted home was music, he was an equally talented artist, and this set, ‘The Paintings of Mike Peake – Scenery’, has been created by Pobjoy Mint to demonstrate his skill at landscape painting: he was known for being able to produce a landscape painting in oil and varnish in as little as 30 minutes.
After his retirement from research science, he made frequent trips to Sea Lion and Carcass Island and made many paintings that captured the rugged land and seascapes. Mike
