he writer of the unusual Spanish Swindle letters stated that they were a political prisoner, and that before they were arrested, they had hidden a large sum of money. They wanted the money safely secreted away in another country. The plan was to entrust it to a well-known banking house, to be organised by a faithful friend. The friend was prepared to remit the sum as long as they received four or five hundred francs to pay for the transfer.
