01 WHAT’S THE CORRECT PSI FOR TYRES?

Why PSI matters

Your tyre is the sole contact point with the ground, so inflation apathy results in an uncomfortable ride. Your ideal PSI (pound-force per square inch) for the terrain and weather can make you more efficient with studies showing up to 70-watt gains depending on speed and ride duration. And then there’s avoiding pinch flats.

Tools of the trade

Track pumps start from £10 and should feature: a gauge; ideally Presta and Schrader options; be able to reach high road pressures; and have a stable base. Tyre levers are another must-have, while spare inners (if you use traditional clinchers), mini pump and a puncture-repair kit are all needed.

Impact of bodyweight

Tyre pressure must be high enough to minimise leaching energy from the deformationtyre pressure). According to Pirelli, on a dry-day ride on tarmac those of you using 700x23c tyres on a 17mm rim who weigh 66-73kg should hit 102psi. That rises to 115psi if you’re over 89kg.
