7 October 1949 East Germany is born

The German Democratic Republic is founded. Wilheim Pieck becomes its president, Otto Grotewohl its minister-president. Real power lies with Walter Ulbricht (left), one of Grotewohl's deputies and, from 1950, general secretary of the ruling party.
