• Continue planting out brassicas — broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower — to ensure constant cropping through the cooler months before the cabbage white butterflies get busy. Consider some sage as a companion for brassicas as it’s said to repel caterpillars and moths. Plus those grey-green leaves look so good!

• Go on putting in alliums including onions, spring onions, garlic, leeks, eschalots and chives — but keep them well away from peas as they can retard the growth of legumes.

• Winter is prime time for planting leafy greens like lettuce, collard
