If you go to Mars, you will never again feel the wind in your hair, smell the flowers, hear the sound of walking through snow… You will be inside a habitat all the time. The only time you will go outside is in a suit.”

The words are from Bas Lansdorp, the Dutch entrepreneur who caught the world’s imagination in 2012 when he announced Mars One, his project aiming to send people to Mars in 2023. It was unlike all other previous plans for manned Mars missions in one big regard:
