Irregular spotting

Q My periods have always been pretty regular but recently I’ve noticed some spotting in between them. I’m not on the pill – is this normal? Orla, Cirencester

A There can be many reasons for spotting in between menstrual cycles.

From stress, to vaginal injury from penetrative sex – they can all be reasons for sporadic bleeding.

A sexually transmitted infection (STI) such as chlamydia can cause irregular spotting, too.
