What You Need To Know
1 What’s the deal with these?
PRS’s latest, most classic-aimed guitars in its McCarty 594 platform. They already feature in both the USA Core and S2 lines and for 2023 they’re now available in the Indonesian-made SE range in both double-cut and, as here, single-cut style.
2 But there are two of them!
Well spotted. Unlike the USA Core or S2 594 Singlecuts, which all feature maple tops, these new SEs come with a either a maple cap that’s faced with a flame maple veneer or the all-mahogany Standard, which trims £150 off the price and, aside from its all-black plastic parts, is the same guitar.
3 What’s different with a 594?
The name comes from the scale length of 24.594 inches, the actual scale Gibson used back in the day, and all 594s use a PRS-designed two-piece bridge/tailpiece setup, with the four controls laid out in classic Gibson style. Also new to the SE solidbody range are the 58/15 LT ‘S’ humbuckers (that feature on the SE Hollowbodies): Indonesian wound versions of the USA pickups that are heavily featured on the S2 guitars.
It’s just over two decades since PRS introduced its Singlecut, the first of its style for the then 15-year-old guitar company. The release achieved notoriety when Gibson objected. The Singlecut was suspended from production until the lengthy legal wranglings resulted in a clean sheet for PRS;
