Loons vs. cormorants

I loved “Death of an Icon?” (Mar/Apr ’23) by Julia Nunes. One thing I’m left wondering about is the threat of cormorants. I live on Stoney Lake in the Kawarthas, Ont., and the increase in the cormorant population each year is frightening. They’re fish eaters, and I wonder if they also affect the survival of our loons?—Joyce Corner, Stoney Lake, Ont.

Joyce, we reached out to Doug Tozer of Birds Canada, and this is what he had to say:
