With a title that cumbersome, a shorthand was inevitable – and though at first we scoffed at ‘Bayokami’, it’s not far wide of the mark. Granted, the watercolour aesthetic of this spin-off is more bedtime storybook than folktale. But its story unfolds in similarly measured fashion, while its blend of exploration, light platforming and environmental puzzles and intricate rural world bears close comparison with Clover Studio’s vulpine action adventure (this is a surprisingly substantial fable, even if it doesn’t match that game’s luxurious length). More pertinently, it features a brand of combat that asks you to think about two things atyou wielded a celestial brush to supplement attacks by claw and jaw, the swipes and bites from the titular demon are supported by the nascent powers of his summoner.
