For over 2,000 years there has been a bridge spanning the River Thames in London. The first was a wooden structure built by the Romans in AD50 near the site of today's London Bridge. Over the next millennia it was frequently rebuilt due to the fragile nature of its construction and its vulnerability to the elements, eventually being replaced inthree centuries, including London Bridge, which had two new iterations completed in 1831 and 1973. From Hampton Court Bridge in the west, to Tower Bridge in the east, some 35 bridges of various constructions built for road, rail and pedestrians now span the Thames in London.
