Q How can I find my skin undertone so I’ll choose the right makeup colors? — KAREN D.

Your undertone is part have hints of yellow, gold or peach; include blue, red and pink; and are usually a mix of both, says Keita Moore, a makeup artist in New York City. To determine your undertone, stand in natural light and hold a piece of white paper or a white shirt up to your face, says New York City makeup artist Jaleesa Jaikaran. If your skin has a more yellow or golden hue, you lean warmer; if it looks pink or a bit red, you are cool-toned; and if you don’t notice a strong tendency toward either, you are likely neutral. When choosing base makeup, look for a label of W (warm), C (cool) or N (neutral) alongside the shade name or number. For color cosmetics, warm undertones often look best in earthy shades like browns and corals; cool tones in purples, pinks, blues and grays; and neutral tones in most hues, including reds, blues, greens and bold colors.
