Mondeo man’ shook off his staid image with the launch of the ST220 in March 2002. Granted, the new flagship Mk3 wasn’t what the RS Cosworth was to the Sierra, but there was no denying that the ST220 had a bit of get up and go. With the familiar V6 Duratec found in lesser versions punched out to 2967cc, the enlarged capacity saw the new Sports Technology Mondeo hit a top speed of 151 mph and sprint from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds.
As its name suggested, the ST220 produced 220 bhp — an increase of 52 bhp over that of the usual Mondeo V6 — and was the fastest production Mondeo ever, even if it wasn’t the most specialised. That accolade went to the earlier ST200 with its fancy camshafts and other tweaks.
