You just don’t see full-frame mirrorless cameras at entry-level prices. Well, not much, anyway: the only real competition the EOS R8 has is Nikon’s Z5, the more expensive Sony a7C, and Canon’s own (cheaper and older) EOS RP.
Indeed, the RP basically birthed the R8 from its own loins, gifting it the same body genetics; the father, if we’re going to continue this odd train of thought, is the far pricier EOS R6 Mark II, which offers up its sensor and autofocus processor. You don’t get the exact same hardware as the £2,779 R6 II, of course. Canon may be generous, but it isn’t stupid: there’s no mechanical first curtain shutter here, for example, which trims down the R8’s high speed capabilities and cuts its burst rate in half, and stabilisation is restricted to in-lens tech only.
But let’s not focus on what it doesn’t have: this is a phenomenal upgrade over the EOS RP, one which brings an incredible sensor to the masses. The advanced features
