Football in a disaster zone

It is going to take years for southern and central Turkey and parts of northern and western Syria to recover from the devastating earthquake that hit in the early hours of the morning on February 6. Football is obviously nowhere near a priority amid such disaster, but the sport will go on, sooner or later, and in the meantime just needs to do all it can to help.

Tens of thousands have died in the affected regions and it was no surprise that a number of teams based there decided that they couldn’t even begin to think about playing football.

TURKEY

Clubs in southern Turkey – Hatayspor and Gaziantep, 14th and10th in the country’s top flight – have withdrawn from the Turkish Super Lig for the rest of the season, but they will not be relegated and it is understood that they will receive the full allocation of broadcasting revenue from the league.
