● “One way to avoid being slowed down on a windy day is to shelter behind another rider,” says cycling coach Ruth Eyles. “If the wind’s head-on then ride very close (but safely) behind the rider in front. Make sure the other rider knows you’re there so that he/she rides smoothly with no sudden braking. If the wind is at a slight angle to your direction of travel, then shelter behind but slightly to the side, keeping in the lee of the rider in front.”
