NATURAL GEM
NORTH YORK MOORS
They may not be as well-known as the Yorkshire Dales, but the more easterly North York Moors have National Park status, too. One of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the UK, they cover an area of 1,436km2 and are criss-crossed by some great singletrack. Both climbs and descents tend to be short, sharp and punchy, while the moorland riding offers long, flowing trails, often accompanied by stunning panoramic views over vast swathes of open countryside. In late July, the heather flowers provide a glorious splash of colour across the rolling hills, which are interspersed with rocky crags and drystone walls.
