In the last couple of months, I’ve come across the theorbo player Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L’Arpeggiata. I have fallen in love with them, particularly their recordings Via Crucis and Teatro d’Amore, which is a journey through Monteverdi. Pluhar is a musician in every cell – she loves to experiment and take risks, she’s not conventional and you feel all the passion and love, but in playing of the highest quality. When you listen to her, you never know quite where she’s going to take you.
I recently heard Herbert Blomstedt conduct the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony live in Munich. Whenever I see Blomstedt doing anything, heleaves me absolutely speechless. He has so much wisdom, charm and noblesse and, even at 95 years old, such incredible youth, industry and precision. From the first horn call at the beginning to that big final climax, the performance had a real sense of direction over all four movements – it was such a special evening.
