The coastlines close to our homes in Dorset and Cornwall provide myriad glorious and vibrant seaweed specimens with which we create our artwork. The amazing range of shapes and colours continually inspire us – from the rich burgundy reds of dulse and beautiful fan weed through to the pale, delicate pinks of sea beech and the deep, earthy greens of the wracks. Our seaweed pressings are lasting celebrations of these flowers of the sea.
Melanie and I were not the first to discover the joy of collecting and pressing seaweeds. We follow in the footsteps of many women throughout history who have done the same – the Victorians were particularly passionate about seaweed and many of their collections survive today in private collections and museums.
