Two medieval shipwrecks discovered in Sweden
The remains of two merchant vessels were discovered last summer in western Sweden during an archaeological excavation. New evidence reveals that the ships were built outside of Scandinavia in the mid-fourteenth century.
The cogs were discovered in the town of Varberg during construction work by a team from Arkeologerna, which is part of the National Historical Museums of Sweden. Named Varbergskoggen 1 and Varbergskoggen 2, the first consists of the nearly complete port side, which is about 20.5 metres long and 5 metres wide. The remains of the second ship are the forward end of the bottom of the hull, roughly 8 meters in length and 4.5 meters in width.
