BOOK lovers, beware: changes have been made to some of your favourite bedtime stories, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda.
This is because some of the books by children’s author Roald Dahl were recently reviewed and updated. The editorial changes affect several of his best-loved works, including The Big Friendly Giant and James and the Giant Peach.
WHAT KIND OF CHANGES WERE MADE?
New editions of Dahl books have had words removed that are considered offensive. Language concerning gender, race, weight, mental health and violence has been taken out or changed. Words such as “fat” and “ugly”, for example, have been done away with.
WHY DID THEY DO THIS?
The books’ publishers, Puffin, say that because the books were written so long ago, they regularly review the language to “ensure that it can continue to be enjoyed by all today”.
