The anniversary of Shakespeare’s First Folio
MORE than 400 years after his career began,
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’s influence on the English language is still felt across the world. The English playwright and poet, who lived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, introduced new words and phrases in his work that are still in use today.
Many of his plays have also been adapted into movies and television series, even in animation form. Just think of films like The Lion King and Gnomeo & Juliet. The Lion King is based on the tragedy Hamlet, while garden gnomes Gnomeo & Juliet portray star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet.
In November this year, the discovery of a document known as Mr William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories and Tragedies was commemorated.
