Eion Stevens’ Home The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Painter

Eion Stevens was a painter of scenarios featuring alter egos, a critical mass of anti-heroes representing aspects of a single personality. He was a great condenser of imagery; each of his works was never one thing but always a generator of possibilities and suggestions. He believed in the power of painting to render sensation and create a coherent world view.

When Eion Stevens died at the age of 68 in August 2021, dozens of his paintings, which had been wrapped up as soon as they were completed, were discovered in storage in Christchurch. The provisions of his will stipulated that these works should be sold for various charities and causes, nominated by a group of his friends and colleagues, in lots of no more than 25 per year. The first tranche of paintings was displayed at Chambers Art Gallery in Sydenham and the proceeds of the sale went to Aviva, the Christchurch Women's Refuge.
