March: when the hens move

AS WE move into March, most of us will have our birds at various different stages in their 2023 breeding season. It’s easy in today’s world of social media to panic if your own birds are behind those of others, but it’s important to remain patient and remember that they will begin breeding when they are ready. Last year I hurried my birds and I’m keen not to make the same mistake.

So far as I am aware, the generally accepted yardstick for canaries breeding is that when they have 14 hours of light the pituitary gland
