It is spring at Sizergh Castle in Cumbria and the annual guests arrive in throngs – daffodils, tulips and crocus bursting from the ground in a kaleidoscope of spectacular shades and colours. Primroses awaken from their earthly slumber, nudging the snowdrops on their way up to join them for their glamorous spring parade. While above them all, glistening pink and white clouds of cherry blossoms gently sway in and out of the lengthening shadows like a symphony conducted by the breeze that has caressed these wonderful gardens for centuries.
The 13-acre Grade II-listed gardens surround the medieval castellated manor of Sizergh Castle, the ancestral home of the Strickland family who have lived here for 800 years.
