‘When my partner built this house, he wanted the mountains to seem close enough to touch’

High up in the Alps, with a breathtaking panorama of mountain peaks, the Swiss resort of Verbier couldn’t be more picturesque. Add to that its host of pristine ski slopes and six-mile toboggan run, and it is simply a winter paradise. Naturally, the village’s typical wooden chalets – rustic on the outside, tastefully modern on the inside – are in high demand. With their elegant high-ceilinged rooms and huge suns soaked terraces, they reflect the soul of a place known as much for its social life as its sports, as we learn when we visit one of the most beautiful, Etoile de Ciel, the home of designer Sophie Bonvin. Here, as she says, the Alps seem “close enough to touch”.
