Ana de Armas has always gone for roles that force her out of her comfort zone. The 34-year-old has played femme fatales, intrepid spies, a Bond girl with a difference, and even a hologram. But good roles can be hard to come by in Hollywood, especially for a Latina woman.
‘I have two separate labels to fight against,’ Ana says, ‘but I know I just have to stay strong and true to what I believe in. It’s important not to compromise your work and ideas for the industry and what some might be expecting you to do or recommending that you do. It’s about being smart and patient, and staying true to your path.’
Staying true to herself has paid off. Ana is careful about the roles she signs on for, even on occasion, she nearly refused the role due to the clichéd character description: ‘Latina caretaker, pretty’. It was only when she read the script and saw the potential in the character that she snatched up the part. The role earned Ana her first Golden Globe nomination.
