The Millennium Bug might not have changed the world in the year 2000, but the PS2 definitely did. With over 155 million units sold, not only is it the most popular console of all time, but it also caused Sega to give up making hardware completely.

Its catalogue of games wasn’t just massive – the console’s power meant it could take free-roaming open-world games to a whole new level. Nobody had, or before, while diverse titles such as , and meant there was something for everyone. Backwards compatibility also gave PS2 owners access to their entire PS1 library, which just added another tantalising reason to upgrade.
