Nintendo’s UK PR manager Rob Saunders was quoted as saying, “The names of our competitors indicate a beefed-up version of what they already offer. The name Wii demonstrates that the system is something totally new to the world of gaming.” Reactions were mixed to say the least. was dutifully positive in calling it an “unusual name”, but left subtlety at the door and noted that “it sounds like a bodily function”. More damningly, described the announcement as “possibly the day that Nintendo threw the towel into the next-generation ring”.
