Leisure Painter

Painting project

Learning objectives

This is part one of a step-by-step demonstration on how to paint a dog with pastel pencils. Most of us at one time or another have used our pets to practise our painting techniques on, or simply painted them for pleasure. I know I have. So, I thought I would share how I painted this lovely photograph of Randall (right) who is a cross between a German shepherd and a Labrador retriever. Randall is a ‘career change’ guide dog, meaning he didn’t quite make the grade as a guide dog and now has the perfect chilled-out pet dog’s life with his owners, with no work asked of him.

There are a couple of short videos showing how I prepared the outline for painting this portrait, which can be found on my website at www.tamingwildlife.com
