Architecture is one of the strongest subjects for black & white but if you’ve been deterred from trying it as you think you need to invest in expensive specialist equipment, then think again. As Billy Currie’s striking images reveal, a good understanding of how to shoot manually, allied with strong post-processing skills, can deliver really stunning shots – and you don’t need to max out your credit card. Billy has won the prestigious EISA Maestro award with his black & white architectural images and runs courses and workshops on the subject, so we were keen to get some in-depth tips.
Billy came to photography relatively late, as he explains. ‘I got my first camera, a Canon DSLR, around 2008, and got to grips with it pretty quickly. In fact, the only reason I bought a camera was to take some images of my dog! But I soon fell in love with photography, especially living in Scotland, where there are so many amazing places to shoot.’
